Base profile - Starter Track for Insulation – Purpose and Application

Introduction

In external thermal insulation systems (ETICS), every detail matters. One of the most important but often overlooked elements is the starter track (base profile) installed at the bottom of the facade. Although it may seem minor, it ensures the stability and aesthetics of the entire insulation system.

1. What is a starter track?

It is an aluminium or steel profile fixed at the base of the facade (where the wall meets the plinth). It creates a stable foundation for placing the first row of insulation boards (EPS, XPS, or mineral wool).

2. Why is it important?

  • Stabilises insulation – prevents insulation boards from sliding down.

  • Ensures a straight line – makes it easier to correctly align the first row of boards.

  • Protects against moisture and pests – closes the gap under the insulation.

  • Provides an aesthetic finish – gives a clean edge between the facade and the foundation.

3. How to choose the right track?

  • Width – match the profile width to the thickness of insulation (e.g. 100 mm, 120 mm).

  • Material – aluminium is most common: lightweight and corrosion-resistant.

  • Accessories – use dedicated connectors, fixings, and expansion joints.

4. Installation step by step

  1. Mark a horizontal line on the wall (usually 30–50 cm above ground level).

  2. Fix the starter track to the wall with expansion plugs.

  3. Connect successive sections with special connectors.

  4. Check alignment with a level – a straight line is key for proper insulation installation.

Conclusion

The starter track is a small but essential element in insulation systems. It guarantees stability, durability, and a neat appearance of the entire facade.
